New Year, Same You?

It’s no secret that 2020 was a year that most were not prepared for.

Whether it was the most challenging year of your life or the best year of your life, I believe it’s fair to say that we all experienced some level of shock to our systems.

As we have entered the new year, we have a choice. We can either hope that 2021 will be better and go about our days the same way we did in the year prior with mere hope for things to improve.

Or, we can choose to take actions to increase our own resilience.

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

So, if we want a better year, we must change something, correct?

I argue that the only thing we can truly control is ourselves. Our mind, body, and spirit is what we have the opportunity to work with. The most complex organism ever found on our planet. Yup, that’s us. We GET TO live the incredibly unique life of a human being on planet earth. That itself is a blessing.

What are some tools we can utilize to improve ourselves?

Some of my favorites include:

  • Walking

  • Reading

  • Exercise

  • Sleep

  • Hydration

  • Nutrition

  • Healthy thinking

  • Proper breathing

Put simply, if we can accept all that is and was from the prior year, we are now able to be here now and move forward with purpose.

Do what you love. Even if that is just for 15 minutes each day. There must be joy and play daily.

Remove things which cause you stress.

Focus on the 6 foundation principles: moving, thinking, breathing, nutrition, hydration, sleep.

Spend time with the people you love and people that support you in your personal growth.

Self-care is not selfish. I would argue it’s the most self-less thing we can.

When we take care of ourselves, we are able to show up in the world as the best version of us which helps others do the same.

Start small, build it up.

Make today the best day ever. Do that everyday. Then, by default, you’ve got yourself the best year ever.

We don’t want to live a life of no challenges. That would be boring. We want to upgrade the quality of our challenges and recognize which are worth spending energy with.

No matter what, keep going. You are worth it. And the world is better with you in it.
