Movement beyond Exercise

Movement is one of the most important aspects of a healthy life.

It is important to note that movement goes beyond exercise.

We must learn to become in-tune with our bodies so that we can recognize which type of movement we need.

Movement is medicine.

Our bodies and minds are connected and cannot be isolated into separate entities. Why is it that you feel better mentally after a good session of movement?

The right movement can heal even the most unhealthy minds. The key word is the RIGHT movement. It may not be the movement that first comes to mind.

For most of us, we associate movement with exercise, using the two words interchangeably.

Movement comes in many forms:

  • Strength training

  • Cardio-vascular training

  • Swimming

  • Yin Yoga

  • Stretching

  • Dancing

  • Tai chi

  • Walking

  • Martial Arts

The list goes on and on and even these categories can be broken down further.

What you will notice from this list however, is that some of these movements expend energy while others are restorative and aid in replenishing energy.

I believe that in order to achieve optimal health, we must bring balance to these energy expending and energy restoring movements. (Yin & Yang)

It is my belief (with scientific backing) that we should aim for 30-40 bouts of resistance training which elevates our heart rate 3-7 days per week, daily walks of at least 20 minutes, topped with energy restoring movements for a minimum of 20 minutes daily.

Humans are meant to move. I think we can all agree on that much.

We all need to understand that every body is different and everyone needs varying amounts and methods of movement depending on life circumstances and conditions.

Reminder: Movement is medicine.

It is always best to discuss with a professional before implementing any major change in movement to your life.

At the end of the day, if you can't do anything else, just walk! This is arguably the most essential movement for our survival. Keep moving. Your body and mind will thank you.
