Mushroom Revival: Changing our Approach to Human & Planet Health.
I sat down with Alex Dorr, the Owner of Mushroom Revival to ask some questions people commonly ask me. I have been fortunate to know Alex since our college days back in 2014 where we first started talking about all things Fungi. I hope that this article helps shed light on the entire kingdom of Fungi, common misconceptions of mushrooms, and the many benefits they provide our human health.
What is the story of Mushroom Revival? How did it come into existence?
Alex: "Mushroom Revival started with my own health crisis. I was diagnosed with lyme disease a few years ago and tried antibiotics which not only did not work, but made me feel worse. It wasn't until I used functional mushrooms that I really revived my health. I knew that I needed to share this with the world and launch Mushroom Revival."
What is the mission of the company?
Alex: "Our mission here at Mushroom Revival is to revive people's health with functional mushrooms. We want to revive the way people see mushrooms as a medicine for the people and the planet. Through our education, we create a positive culture around mushrooms. Through our products we help people gain more energy, a better night's sleep, a clearer mind, and a bullet proof immune system with functional mushrooms. By planting a tree for every product we sell we are reviving the planet and making the world a better place."
What are common misconceptions people have about mushrooms & fungi?
Alex: "There are so many misconceptions."
"They are all poisonous and dangerous. There are actually more poisonous plants than there are mushrooms."
"They are slimy, gross and taste bad. Most people are only familiar with the button mushroom that you see on pizza's. This is not the tastiest mushroom in my opinion and is very unappetizing and can be slimy. There are lots of other gourmet mushrooms that are absolutely delectable."
"All mushrooms are psychedelic. This is only a very, very, very small fraction of mushrooms."
Why do people have this fear / misconception of mushrooms?
Alex: "Not all people do. Some countries are mycophillic (meaning they love mushrooms) some are mycophobic (meaning they fear/hate mushrooms). At the root of it, most people fear or have a misconception of mushrooms because they do not understand them."
What can fungi / mushrooms do for the health of our planets ecosystems?
Alex: "Fungi are the stewards of the planet. They connect over 95% of all terrestrial plants and are responsible for 50-70% of carbon stored in the soil. Fungi/mushrooms have been demonstrated to break down a lot of different human made toxins such as petroleum hydrocarbons, some forms of plastic, and more."
Which mushrooms are your favorite and why?
Alex: "My favorite mushrooms are cordyceps. They infect insects in the wild and are probably the coolest, wildest thing in nature by far. Cordyceps militaris also has helped me dramatically to gain back my energy levels from Lyme Disease."
Who can benefit from adding medicinal mushrooms to their lifestyle and where is a good place to start?
Alex: "Anyone and everyone. A good starting place for someone who just wants to try them out is probably Mush 10, where you get 10 different mushrooms all packed into one. (The Mush 10 is offered in a tincture or powdered form on his website) They are potent adaptogens to help us cope with stress and fatigue and support a healthy immune system."
Any mushroom fun facts you’d like to share?
Alex: "We are more closely related to fungi than we are to plants on a DNA level."
